Protests in Pakistan Conrolled Kashmir After India Revokes Kashmir Autonomy
Angry demonstrators took to the streets in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir, on Monday, August 5, to protest against the Indian government’s change in Kashmir’s status and the security lock-down that has kept thousands of people inside their homes.
The Indian decision would eliminate Kashmir’s right to autonomy on all matters except defense, communications and foreign affairs. It would also allow Indians from outside the region to permanently settle, buy land, and hold local government jobs.
The decree was issued amid heightening tensions in Kashmir, as thousands of newly-deployed Indian troops arrived and some internet and phone services were cut. (AP)
