India Revokes Special Status for Kashmir: Hindu Kashmiris Celebrate

India’s government on Monday, August 5, revoked the special status of Kashmir in a bid to fully integrate its only Muslim-majority region with the rest of the country, the most far-reaching move on the troubled Himalayan territory in nearly seven decades.

The announcement came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a Cabinet meeting and the government’s top-decision making body on security matters. Home Minister Amit Shah announced the decision amid uproar in India’s two houses of parliament.
