U.S. Secretary Pompeo Meets With Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Kyiv, Friday, January 31. Pompeo is the highest-ranking U.S. official to travel to Ukraine since the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump began.
His visit comes as Trump’s impeachment trial was set for a climactic vote on Friday or Saturday that is likely to acquit the president.
After talks with Pompeo, Zelenskiy said he appreciated U.S. support, but emphasized that Washington should be more involved in resolving his country’s conflict with Moscow-backed separatists.
Ukraine is walking a careful line in its relations with the U.S. — keen to maintain American backing in the war but wary of being further entangled in U.S. domestic politics. (AP)
