TRUMP DELIVERS: Thanksgiving Gas Prices Plunge to 5-Year Low — National Average $3.02 as Americans Save Big at the Pump
American motorists hitting the road for Thanksgiving are enjoying the cheapest holiday gas prices in five years, with the national average holding at $3.02 per gallon — a dramatic drop from the $3.77 drivers paid during Thanksgiving 2023 under the Biden administration.
Nearly 30 states now have average prices below $3 a gallon, led by Oklahoma at $2.57, Mississippi at $2.61 and Louisiana at $2.65, according to AAA and GasBuddy data released Tuesday. The relief at the pump comes as President Donald Trump’s energy dominance agenda delivers measurable results for working-class families can feel immediately.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt credited the sharp decline to Trump’s swift rollback of Biden-era restrictions on domestic oil and natural gas production. “President Trump ended Joe Biden’s green new scam policies and is making America affordable again,” Leavitt said. “More American energy means lower costs at the pump, more jobs, and real relief for families this holiday season.”
The $3.02 national average matches last Thanksgiving’s price but stands in stark contrast to the painful highs of recent years: $3.39 in 2021, $3.56 in 2022 and $3.77 in 2023. Motorists also saw the lowest Labor Day prices in half a decade earlier this year.
AAA projects a record 82 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more over the holiday weekend, an increase of 1.6 million from 2024, with lower fuel costs cited as a major factor encouraging road trips.
While high-tax states such as California ($4.63), Hawaii ($4.47) and Washington ($4.18) remain expensive, the nationwide plunge reflects surging U.S. crude production, streamlined permitting and the reopening of federal lands and waters to responsible energy development — all signature first-month accomplishments of the Trump administration.
