Targeted Attack on Dallas ICE Facility Leaves Two Detainees Dead
DALLAS — A targeted attack on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas left two detainees dead and one injured Wednesday, authorities said. The shooter, who died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, opened fire during a detainee transfer, escalating concerns about rising violence against law enforcement.
The shooting occurred around 6:30 a.m. local time at the Dallas ICE Detention Facility, according to the Dallas Police Department. Three detainees inside a law enforcement van were shot, with two succumbing to their injuries. No officers were harmed.
The FBI is investigating the incident as a deliberate attack on ICE, citing anti-ICE messaging found on bullet casings near the shooter. Authorities said the shooter attempted to force entry through the facility’s sally port during the transfer.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the fatalities in a statement on X, saying, “Details are still emerging, but we can confirm multiple injuries and fatalities. The shooter is deceased by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Our ICE law enforcement faces unprecedented violence. It must stop. Please pray for the victims and their families.”
Vice President JD Vance condemned the attack, writing on X, “The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop. I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and their families.”
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the incident an “assassination” and vowed continued support for ICE operations. “Texas fully backs ICE,” Abbott said. “This will not slow our arrest, detention, and deportation of illegal immigrants. We will work with Dallas Police to uncover the assassin’s motive and offer ICE additional support.”
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, speaking at a Dallas press conference, denounced the violence, stating, “If we want to debate immigration, we can do so in Congress. Violence has no place.”
Rep. Marc Veasey, D-Texas, whose district includes the facility, said his office is monitoring the situation and keeping the victims in prayer.
Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin noted a recent bomb threat at the same facility, suggesting the location may have been under surveillance.
