Snow? The lasting effects of a blizzard? -45 degree weather? Extreme weather conditions? Too bad.
Although some of the Republican candidates had to cancel schedule campaign events in Iowa over the weekend due to the weather, they certainly don’t want Iowans to cancel their plans to caucus for them today.
Come hell or high water, the Republican presidential candidates think that Iowans should brave the elements today and caucus for them so they can get some good campaign momentum and PR.
The Republican presidential candidates have decided that the Republican Iowa caucusgoers should embrace the mantra “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays caucusgoers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”
The weather forecast from the National Weather Service for Des Moines on Monday is a high of -4 and wind chill values are predicted to be as low as -30. And this is after a weekend blizzard.
Are the candidates worried about the health and welfare of their “voters”? Nope. They are worried about the impact of the weather on caucus turnout. A dangerous record-breaking cold front doesn’t phase them. But Iowa Republicans staying safe at home on Monday does.
According to CBS News, “Officials are warning that frostbite can occur within 10 minutes of outdoor exposure and as Iowans will be lining up at their local caucus site, with some forced to wait outside for extended periods of time.”
But it’s all for a good cause, right?
Even though Iowa has been, and some still could be, going through this.
At a rally on Sunday, Trump told a crowd they needed to caucus no matter what, saying, “If you’re sick as a dog, you say, darling — even if you vote and then pass away, it’s worth it.”
Trump’s team told him the bad weather was “good” news because the “other side” won’t be committed to vote for their candidates as enthusiastically as the MAGA crowd. Trump said at an event, “We won’t lose one vote, because our people, they use the term ‘walk on glass.’ They’re not going to stay away. They’re going to ‘walk on glass.’”
The other candidates are hoping that their faithful supporters will be “walking on glass” for them as well.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said to his base about showing up, “It’s not going to be pleasant. But if you’re willing to go out there…if you’re willing to brave the elements and be there for the couple hours that you have to be there, if you’re willing to do that, you’re willing to fight for me on Monday night, then as president, I’ll be fighting for you for the next eight years.”
Former South Carolina Governor/Ambassador Nikki Haley told her supporters, “I know it’s asking a lot of you to go out and caucus, but I also know we have a country to save and I will be out there in the cold. Please wear layers of clothes, just in case there are lines so that you are staying safe.”
Well, at least SHE is telling them to stay safe while they possibly risk their lives to caucus for her.
