Police Crack Down on Protestors in Nigeria

Police in Nigeria clamped down on a planned protest in Lagos, Monday, August 5, arresting demonstrators and journalists and forcing them into police vans. Riot officers sealed off the stadium where the rally— promoted on social media as #RevolutionNow—took place. The arrests came after rally organizer and pro-democracy campaigner Omoyele Sowere was detained over the weekend after authorities accused him of calling for the overthrow of the government. While Nigerian police labeled Monday’s protest as an “act of terrorism,” demonstrators said they were advocating for an improvement to the security situation in the country. (AP)
