Obama Criticizes Trump Administration Over Media Censorship Concerns
WASHINGTON -- Former President Barack Obama commented on ABC's decision to indefinitely suspend "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" following controversial remarks by host Jimmy Kimmel about the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Obama accused the Trump administration of escalating cancel culture to a "dangerous level" by pressuring media companies to silence or dismiss individuals they disagree with.
"This is exactly the kind of government overreach the First Amendment was meant to guard against, and media companies must stand firm instead of yielding to it," Obama stated in a post on X.
On Monday, Kimmel remarked that conservatives reached "new lows" by attempting to portray the accused assassin, Tyler Robinson, as a leftist.
"We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA group desperately trying to paint this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything but one of their own, scrambling to score political points from it," Kimmel said.
Kimmel's comments about Kirk drew significant backlash and were criticized by Nexstar Media Group President Andrew Alford.
"Mr. Kimmel’s statements regarding Mr. Kirk’s death are offensive and insensitive at a pivotal moment in our national political discourse, and we believe they do not align with the diverse opinions, views, or values of the communities we serve," Alford said in a press release.
