Hundreds of Protesters Clash With Police in Indian Kashmir

Protesters took to the streets in large numbers and clashed with security forces in Srinagar, India, in the northern Jammu and Kashmir regions, Friday, August 16. Police reportedly fired tear gas shells on the protesters, though no injuries were reported.
With the central government demonstrations and unrest, the Muslim-majority northern territory has been under lockdown since the first week of August, when the Indian government stripped the region of its autonomy. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam said that authorities would begin restoring phone lines in Kashmir Friday evening. (REUTERS)
