History of Sports Betting in Florida
Is sports betting legal in Florida? Yes, but the legality of the compact between tribal interests and the state has led to legal challenges and an on/off nature of the legality of sports betting in the state.
A September 2021 agreement between the Seminole tribe and Governor DeSantis made sports betting legal at Seminole land-based casinos and, over a month later, on the Hard Rock Bet Sportsbook app.
Shortly after, legal challenges emerged.
The compact faced lawsuits arguing that allowing online betting throughout Florida violated both federal and state law, specifically the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), which mandates that gaming must occur on tribal land. As a result, Seminole closed down Florida’s only sports betting app.
In June 2023, the U.S. Court of Appeals overturned that ruling. It’s a complex situation, but that’s the current situation in Florida.
Meanwhile, there are plenty of top betting sites, such as those on my list, that are licensed and regulated in their countries of origin and, therefore, safe for Floridians to use.
Pros and Cons of Joining Betting Apps in Florida
Most Floridian sports bettors will know the many advantages of using Florida betting apps, but it is also important to acknowledge the downsides, even if they’re heavily outweighed.
Florida Betting Apps Pros
It’s Safe and Secure
Any top sports betting app in Florida knows that customer safety comes first. All the sportsbooks on my list use highly encrypted connections (HTTPS) to protect data transmitted between their platforms and users' devices.
The best FL betting sites will also have a range of accessible, secure payment methods, with options such as bank transfer, credit/debit cards, and leading cryptocurrencies that will keep user data safe.
It’s Convenient
Any Floridian bettor with an internet connection and a mobile device or computer has 24/7 access to the latest odds, betting markets, and promotions offered by the best Florida betting apps.
You Can Bet In-Play
With the advent of online betting comes the ability to place live bets on sporting games and events. Have you ever had the feeling that one team will sneak a win against the odds? With in-play betting, you can back those hunches with up-to-the-minute odds that alter as the action takes place.
Fast Payouts
Many of the best sports betting apps in Florida offer fast withdrawals, as they understand the importance of gaining access to your winnings without unnecessary delays. Most FL bettors can take advantage of lightning-fast withdrawals using cryptocurrencies or the not-as-fast but highly secure payment gateways of major credit/debit cards.
Florida Betting Apps Cons
There’s No Guarantees You’ll Win
Life has no guarantees, including when you place sports bets in Florida. Your bets can lose, no matter how favorable the odds are. That’s why I’m a big proponent of responsible gambling with money you can afford to lose.
Your Winnings are Taxable
The state of Florida does not tax gambling winnings, but you are required to pay taxes at a federal level. How much you’re required to pay will depend on the federal tax bracket you fall under and the size of your winnings.
Most Popular Sports Teams to Bet on in Florida
The Sunshine State is known for being the home of many iconic sports teams, such as the Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Florida bettors regularly back the above on the best sports betting apps, while the Florida Gators and Miami Hurricanes college football teams also attract plenty of action.
Below, we’ll regularly update the odds of the most popular Florida sports teams to ensure you never miss the best prices.
● Miami Dolphins (NFL)
● Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL)
● Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL)
● Miami Heat (NBA)
● Orlando Magic (NBA)
● Tampa Bay Rays (MLB)
● Miami Marlins (MLB)
● Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL)
● Florida Panthers (NHL)
● Inter Miami CF (MLS)
● Orlando City SC (MLS)
Other Types of Gambling in Florida
Floridians have access to various other forms of gambling, whether that’s casino gambling, horse race betting, poker, the lottery, or daily fantasy sports. However, as you’ll see, not all are legal in an online capacity.
Casino Gambling
Currently, the Seminole tribe operates six brick-and-mortar casinos offering slot machines, poker, blackjack, craps, and roulette, with the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Hollywood being the most prominent.
Alternatively, some offshore Florida mobile sports betting apps on my list offer casino games Floridians can play without legal recourse.
Daily Fantasy Sports
While Daily Fantasy Sports is not regulated within the Sunshine State, many of the country’s top platforms, like FanDuel and DraftKings, offer DFS to Florida residents.
Poker
Poker is available at most of Florida’s tribal casinos. The Hard Rock Hotel Casino boasts 40 poker tables, the most anywhere else in the state. Various racetracks in Florida also host legal poker rooms.
For instance, the Palm Beach Kennel Club offers Hold’em, Omaha, and Stud cash tables, while players can participate in Multi-Flight Events, offering huge prize pools.
Horse Racing
Horse racing is legal in the Sunshine State, with both trackside and online pari-mutuel betting permitted. The latter, which is the only legal form of online gambling legal in Florida, is regulated by the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel betting.
Florida's most famous horse racing tracks are Tampa Bay Downs, Gulfstream Park, and Casino Pompano Park.
Lottery
Playing lotteries in Florida has been legal since 1986 when Floridians voted 63.57% in favor of the State Lottery Initiative.
Today, lottery tickets can be purchased for multi-state lotteries, including the Powerball and Mega Millions, and state-run lotteries like the Florida Lotto and Fantasy 5. Instant-win scratchcard games are also permitted and are widely sold at authorized retailers.
