Egypt Knife Sellers Sharpen Blades Before Eid al-Adha

Knife shops in Alexandria, Egypt are preparing small and large knives to sell as Eid al-Adha draws near. A well-known practice during this Muslim holiday involves butchering sheep or goats and giving a portion of the meat to the poor. Both butchers and ordinary Egyptians will shop for the sharpest knives to perform this Islamic ritual.

This year Muslims around the world will mark Eid al-Adha on Sunday, August 11. The holiday commemorates the prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son when told to do so by Allah. When Ibrahim was about to kill his son Allah gave him a lamb to sacrifice instead.
