California Activist Strips to Bikini at School Board Meeting to Protest Transgender Locker Room Policy
Davis, Calif. — Beth Bourne, a local women’s rights activist and chair of Moms for Liberty in Yolo County, stripped to a bikini during a Davis Joint Unified School Board meeting on Sept. 18 to protest policies allowing transgender students access to girls’ locker rooms.
During the meeting, Bourne addressed the board about locker room policies at Emerson, Holmes, and Harper Junior High Schools. “I’m here today to talk about the policies you have for the locker rooms in the junior high schools,” Bourne said. “Right now, we require our students to undress for PE class. So I’m just going to give you an idea what that looks like when I undress,” before removing her clothes to reveal a bikini.
Bourne continued, criticizing the district’s policy allowing students to choose bathrooms based on their gender identity. Board members interrupted, ordering her to stop, prompting Bourne to claim a violation of her First Amendment rights. School Board Vice President Hiram Jackson called a recess. After resuming, Bourne attempted to repeat her protest, leading to another recess lasting over 30 minutes. The board then moved to a new topic.
Bourne, who has attended monthly board meetings for three years to oppose the policy, told CBS News on Sept. 19, “If the adults don’t feel comfortable watching someone, and I’m a 50-year-old woman, how can they expect girls to feel comfortable doing that in the locker room? I thought I made a really good point.”
Trustee Cecilia Escamilla-Greenwald told The Vanguard that police were called after the second recess. She described Bourne’s actions as “very inappropriate” and said the board is consulting with counsel to determine next steps.
The Davis Joint Unified School Board did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
